Opposite Brookhouse runs Clapham Beck, from which the guest house and cafe derives it's name. The beck runs down from the slopes of Ingleborough mountain, through Ingleborough cave and the lake, over a waterfall and through the village, flowing beneath several bridges.Clapham is home to the Cave Rescue Organisation, which has rescued people and animals both above and below ground across a wide area of the Dales.
At the head of the village stands the church of St. James, which was founded in Norman times. The current church dates from the 19th century, but the 12th century tower remains.
The famous Ingleborough Cave can be reached from Brookhouse via the lakeside woodland walk through the historic Ingleborough Estate nature trail.This show cave has attracted many thousands of visitors ever since its discovery in 1837. Brookhouse is an ideal centre from which to tour the Lake District and the Dales of Herriot country. Behind the Guest House Ingleborough rises majestically 2,373 feet and along with Whernside and Pen-Y-ghent forms “The three Peaks”. A must for keen walkers.
Within five miles you can explore White Scar and Ingleborough Caves or visit Ingleton Waterfalls Walk.
Why not enjoy a trip on the historic Settle-Carlisle railway, which is easily accesible from a number of stations within a 10 minute drive. Settle, an old market town, is just six miles away and offers many attractions for the visiting tourist.
The historic city of Lancaster is fifteen miles away and the old market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, nine miles. Kendal gateway to the Lakes is twenty six miles west and Skipton gateway to the Dales twenty five miles east. The Fylde Coast and the seaside resorts of Morecambe and Blackpool are all within easy reach.
